About Our Troop

Troop 199 was founded in 1947 and has served St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Denver Area for over 60 years. In 1953 Ken Maetzold became scoutmaster for the little troop and allowed it to grow to the famous “Mile High Adventure Troop” of Denver Area Coucil. Our troop has gone on many adventures such as canoe trips on the Canadian wilderness, to the deserts of the Southwest. We have climbed 14,000-ft peaks and hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. We have skied down world-renowned mountains, and so much more.

Ken retired after 50 years of service in 2003 to give the post to Kevin Koalenz. So far we have had 115 Eagle Scouts, and growing. Ever since the beginning we have been a big supporter of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout honor society, and many of our members continue their leadership skills that they learn with us there and so many other places. For the past 60 years, we have gone on many adventures, and we’d love to see you join us.

Our Mission at Troop 199

To maintain a scout led organization, which adheres to the principals of the Boy Scouts motto, law and the oath, with emphasis on leadership, outdoor adventure and service to the community.
